Harper and Callie the Sugar Gliders

Age: 3 months old

Personalities:

Sugar Gliders have a unique personality and are filled with curiosity. These crazy girls like to sleep all day and party all night Affectionate and playful in nature these gliders will often seek out human attention but be careful, if you give them something they don't like - they will let you know by throwing it at you!

Fun Facts:

Sugar gliders can live up to 15 years. Being part of the marsupial family, sugar gliders carry their babies in a pouch. A parachute like membrane connects their arms and legs which allows them to glide up to 55 feet!

What can we learn:

Sugar gliders help teach about aerodynamics, we help connect with students by studying their gliding membrane, known as the patagium, which extends from its forelegs to its hind legs.

Kevin the Sulcata Tortoise

Age: 8 years old

Personalities:

The Sulcata or Spurred Tortoise is a stoic and intelligent animal. Kevin is a calm guy that loves to spend his days soaking up the sun and eating his greens. Most Sulcata Tortoises are eager eaters and seldom turn down a meal.

Fun Facts:

The Sulcata Tortoise can live for up to 70 years and are found in one of the hottest places in the world - the Saharah Desert! Being the largest mainland tortoise these animals can reach weights of well over 100 pounds and are the 3rd largest tortoise in the world!

What can we learn:

Sulcata Tortoises help us understand how important other animals can be to an ecosystem. Sulcata tortoises help many species of animal survive one of the worlds harshest environments -- The Sahara Desert!

Nacho the Eyelash Crested Gecko

Age: 6 months old

Personality:

Crested Geckos are nocturnal and will spend most daylight hours in their enclosure. Most of these Geckos will tolerate gentle handling and are often interested in humans. Nacho has a big personality and even has a favorite chair that she enjoys relaxing on! This active girl will leap across the room to get to her favorite chair!

Fun Facts:

Thought to be extinct until 1994 the Crested Gecko is a member of the reptile family and can live between 5 - 10 years. These omnivores live off of a balanced diet of insects, nectar and fruit. Crested Geckos are also excellent jumpers and can be seem leaping from perch to perch like a frog! The Crested Gecko will also regularly shed their skin and are about 5 - 8 inches long when full grown.

What can we learn:

These Geckos have an amazing ability to stick to almost any surface. They do this by using special hairs called setae.

Calvin the Patagonian Cavy

Age: 5 weeks old

Personality:

Calvin being just a little guy still likes to drink from a bottle. During our program you'll be able to see him feed live!

Fun Facts:

Looking a lot like a jack rabbit, these animals are actually part of the rodent family. They have long legs that allow them to reach speeds up to 30mph and leap up to 6 feet! 

What can we learn:

Like the Sulcata Tortoise, the Patagonian Cavy also helps other animals survive. The animals have three hoof like toes that help them dig large burrows which provide shelter for them and other animals

Salt and Pepper the Hedgehogs

Age: 2 Months old

Personality:

Hedgehogs can have varying personalities. Salt is pretty adventurous and loves to explore while Pepper can be more on the shy side and loves to be comfortable.

Fun Facts:

Hedgehogs are covered with spines made from Keratin giving these animals a strong defense despite their size!

What can we learn:

Hedgehogs can adapt to various climates and they even have the super power of being immune to poisonous snake bites.
